Mark Edward Warren III

Television and film director, Mark Edward Warren III was born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky on September 24, 1938.  He came to Hollywood from Toronto, Canada in 1968 after six years as a producer/director with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1972, he became the first African American to win the coveted "Emmy Award" for Outstanding Directorial Achievement for his direction of the hit series, "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In".  He also won the NAACP's "Image Award" for Excellence in Directing for "The New Bill Cosby Show".  Mark and the late director/photographer Gordon Parks were the first African American directors to become members of the Directors Guild of America, Inc.

Mark produced and/or directed television series and specials starring Sammy Davis, Jr., Bill Cosby, John Candy, Ray Charles, Diana Ross and The Supremes, The Temptations, Dinah Shore, Diahann Carroll, Cher, Red Foxx, Beverly Sills, Joey Heatherton, Flip Wilson, Robert Guilliaume, Muhammed Ali, Dick Clark, Nancy Wilson and many others.  Throughout his career, he continued directing and/or producing for the CBC and CTV.

Mark had been an instructor for the Directors Guild of America's Special Projects Workshops ("Directing the Situation Comedy") and Crossroads Academy teaching ("Acting for the Camera".)

Mark was an adjunct professor teaching a graduate course in "Multi-Camera Television Production" at the University of Southern California, a guest lecturer at AFI and FIW and continued to direct "The Apollo Theater Comedy Hour" until his death on January 15, 1999.

Mark Edward Warren III was eulogized by his sons, actress Cicely Tyson, producer George Schlatter, producer Sam Denoff and the late Reverend, Dr. O. C. Smith.  He is survived by his wife Beryl, his mother Mary (who has since passed 11/20/2008), sons André, Brian and Christopher, daughters-in-law Christy, Lori, and Lisa, stepdaughter Yolanda and grandchildren.
